Acting Qld Premier Paul Lucas
Limiting Australia Day alcohol sales is unlikely to reduce anti-social behaviour, Paul Lucas says.

Acting Queensland Premier Paul Lucas says he doesn't believe limiting the sale of alcohol on Australia Day would reduce anti-social behaviour.

A senior NSW police officer has emailed bottle shops and pubs in his state asking them to refuse to sell drinks with an alcohol content of more than four per cent before 2pm on the day of national celebrations.

Chief Inspector Guy Haberley told the pubs that "recent times have also seen Australia Day become a day for binge drinking, anti-social behaviour and alcohol-related crime and violence".

Mr Lucas told reporters in Brisbane that while he was happy to examine the idea he did not think there had been a problem with Australia Day behaviour in Queensland.

He said that in any case many people would already have alcohol at home and would not need to buy it on Australia Day.

"People can have it (alcohol) the day before at home," he said.

"I'm not really sure that's the solution to it.

"I wouldn't want to be saying to mums and dads that you can't have a beer.

"I haven't noticed that there has been a problem with Australia Day behaviour in the past in Queensland."
